UNC’s Campus Y is home to 34 social justice organizations and thousands of student volunteers, who are tackling a range of issues as diverse as criminal justice reform, literacy education, gender equity, and food security. Our students gain practical hands-on experience and leadership skills through these activities, translating their vision for a better, more just society into measurable local and global impact.

BY THE NUMBERS

WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO?

Meet some of our current Campus Y leaders and read their hands to learn “why they do what they do.” You can find a list of our executive board members here and a list of our 31 committees here.

COMMITTEE SPOTLIGHT: BEST BUDDIES

Best Buddies pairs UNC students with members of the Chapel Hill community who have intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Best Buddies mission is to facilitate and create lasting friendships between the college buddies and the community buddies, through regular group events (talent shows, UNC sporting events, movie screenings, etc.), but also through one-to-one meetings outside of large group events. In 2018, UNC Best Buddies was named “Outstanding College Chapter of the Year”.

SUPPORT STUDENT VOLUNTEERISM AND SOCIAL JUSTICE AT UNC

How do we effectively fight for social justice in our community and address critical, local social needs? At the Campus Y, we’re building on a tradition that reaches back over a century and a half and has encompassed the civil rights, free speech, workers’ rights and anti-war movements. Campus Y students continue to deliver more than 100,000 hours of public service every year at home and abroad.

Gifts to this fund go directly to the student Executive Board and Cabinet to support student programming and operations, including funding for volunteer projects and capacity building for student leadership.
